Very early in my career, I was tasked with marketing an early-stage international logistics company that had revolutionized the way companies shipped to Mexico. The sheer scope of the opportunity made me giddy. It seemed incredible that I, as a young marketer, should get to promote a service that had no competition. “What fun!,” I thought. “What a cakewalk!”
Little did I know.
I soon discovered that because our service was so new and different, we had to educate people about our offering, explaining exactly how and why our solution was so much better than other shipping services, before customers would buy (yes, Virginia, there is always competition – even if just from the status quo). Over the next 17 months, I developed marketing, sales, and public relations programs to grow the business by 300%.
As a consultant, I’ve provided presentation coaching to the founder of a growing financial services company, who later credited the training with helping her successfully sell her business to a top 100 accounting firm. I’ve also co-developed a branding guide for a national environmental conservation group, and added marketing perspective to a strategic plan being developed for one of the world’s largest defense contractors.
